INTRODUCTION
Sindh Bureau of Statistics (SBOS) has initiated weekly price data collection for a basket of 50 essential items on each Thursday for the compilation of the Sensitive Price Index of Sindh (SPI-Sindh) in align with the computational methodology of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
The objective of Sensitive Price Index (SPI) is to monitor inflation in Sindh at shorter interval to support the provincial government in price control.
The base year for calculation of Sensitive Price Index of Sindh (SPI-Sindh) has been selected 2015-16 as of PBS so as to be consistent and comparable with National Statistical Organization (NSO). And base prices has been derived from PBS’s National Sensitive Price Index (SPI) 2015-16 data of four Cities of Sindh i.e. Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana.
The reports are compiled on the basis of data collected by field Officers/Officials of the Bureau of Statistics from 30 districts; covering four shops & two markets per district i.e. total 60 Markets & 120 shops allover Sindh and prices of two commodities namely Electricity and Gas Charges are reproduced from PBS’s Nation SPI data of the same period.
In order to ensure veracity of SBOS’s reports, SPI for Sindh has also been calculated from PBS’s National SPI data of four major cites of Sindh for same periods and compared with SBOS’s data which shows no significant difference and trend is almost same.
The report marks the first step towards reporting of commodities market prices hence any errors & omissions identified and suggestions provided are accepted and welcomed from policy makers, researchers, scholars, academia and civil society.
